Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ Design

Just from looking at it alone, it looks almost identical with its little sibling, the Galaxy S6 Edge. The Edge Plus features a 5.7 inch display, similarly to the iPhone 6 Plus and the Galaxy Note 4 and Note 5. The phone still retains its unique design of 2 curved glass display on its edges. It also retains many other design elements that’s in the S6 Edge including the glass body on the front and back, and metal outer shell. The design remains sleek and stylish. This is expected though, because it should be a bigger version of the S6 Edge.

Most of the changes are not in the design itself, but actually with its features and software. What’s great about the design of the S6 Edge+ compared to the iPhone 6 Plus is that the camera is still protected under the aluminum frame for the Edge+, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a slightly protruded camera from its frame. This makes the design of the Edge Plus sleeker and also more practical.

Another thing that is quite impressive with the S6 Edge+ is the fact that it is only 20 grams heavier than the smaller Galaxy S6 Edge! The total weight of the phone is 153 grams. You will barely notice the difference in weight, even though the size of the phone is much bigger.

Display

As previously mentioned, the curved display is a 5.7 inch Super AMOLED, similarly to the Galaxy Note 5 and other Note flagships. Samsung Galaxy Note 6 Edge has a 5.1 inch display. So this is considerably larger than its sibling. The resolution of the Edge+ display is 2560 x 1440 pixels, with a pixel density of 581 ppi. This surely will produce brilliant images with this kind of resolution, which have been one of the biggest selling-point of Samsung. Because of its Super AMOLED technology within the display, the color contrast and brightness of the images will turn out to be amazing! Although this seems great, it is not of those super new technology that we have never seen before from Samsung. If you expected a big shift, then you will be disappointed.

Software

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system installed. It also comes with pre-installed apps, just like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Those apps include S-Voice, S-Health, and Microsoft SkyDrive. What’s unique about the Edge+ is the “apps edge.” You will be able to access you favorite apps and people with the advantage of the edge.

During the introduction of the S6 Edge, we now have the joy of accessing your frequently used contacts through the “People Edge” shortcut. With the S6 Edge+, you can also access your favorited apps. This feature is known as the “Apps Edge.” This will allow you to get a quicker launch to your app.

Another handy feature for the S6 Edge Plus is the SideSync. The software allows you to transfer files from your Samsung phone to your computer. The SideSync is compatible with both Windows and Mac. You also have the option to answer phone calls and text messages straight from your computer. So if you are one of those who needs to see notifications without looking at your phone, this feature will be especially helpful!

Hardware and performance

Similarly to the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the processor of the Edge+ is Exynos 7420 chip, which is an octa-core 64-bit SoC. It also uses 14nm FinFET semiconductors, meaning that the phone will be able to perform at the highest level without giving out too much heat.

It got an upgraded RAM of 4GB, from a 3GB. This will make your browsing much smoother. It is perfect for gamers who need a phone that will be able to handle high quality pictures without catching lags. So if you are a multitasker, this phone is definitely for you. Your experience with heavy usage of the phone will be seamless.

The S6 Edge and the S6 Edge+ have gotten rid of the expendable MicroSD card option. It came to a surprise that the S6 Edge Plus only comes in 32GB and 64GB models. The S6 Edge is available in 64GB and 128GB. We are not sure why they decided to do this, but it probably has to do with pricing.

Cameras

The one thing you can be confident with Samsung devices it the quality of their cameras. Samsung have always been the leader in having the best camera technology for its phones and tablets. There is no bump up in terms of the number of megapixels. The S6 Edge+ has a maximum resolution of 16 megapixels for the main back camera, while the front selfie camera has a maximum resolution of 5 megapixels. Some of you might be disappointed by this. However, to put this number in perspective, the iPhone 6 Plus has an 8 megapixel main camera. So, Samsung is way ahead in its game.

The S6 Edge+ has a really fast shutter speed, allowing you to capture moments that has fast motions. The 16 megapixel camera, also in Galaxy S6 Edge, captures rich details. Fast moment require quick response. Not only that you will able to freeze moments, but the time that will take you to launch the camera app is one of the fastest in the market. The camera has an aperture of f/1.9 lens. It allows a lot of light in, creating images with rich details.

You could expect the S6 Edge Plus to take your best selfie yet. Samsung really focus on creating a phone that takes amazing selfies. The Edge+ has Advanced Selfie technology. It also has many great filters to further enhance your best features. There’s also a real-time HDR, which uses different exposure levels in different parts of the image in order to get the most details. The HDR mode is available for both photos and videos.

The new feature that you can expect the S6 Edge Plus to be a game changer is the live streaming. This feature is also available with the Galaxy Note 5. With the native camera app, you can live stream from your phone straight to YouTube. You can take social media and sharing to a whole new level. You can schedule steams and live push. You will also have the option to set audience and privacy for your videos. For instance, if you only want to share a video with your close friends, you can set the privacy to invite-only session. This will allow you to hand pick your audience!

Create amazing collages with your videos! Why share one when you can share up to four at once! With the Collage Mode, you can compile different videos onto one screen. Another great thing about this Samsung phone is the ability to get creative. Instead of downloading different apps to edit your videos, you can easily create a short-film with your Samsung phone. You can combine short clips into one film for you to share with your friends and loved ones! How convenient is this! You can really see the attention to media sharing with Samsung. Also, just like the iPhone 6, you also have the option to shoot slow motion videos.

Battery and Charging

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus has a 3000mAh battery, slightly bigger than the S6 Edge. The S6 Edge has a battery capacity of 2600mAh. It is not a big jump, considering that it has a much bigger screen to power. Let’s hope that the extra 400mAh will be able to perform well.

One of the unique things about the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and the Edge+ is the wireless charging. To charge the phone wirelessly, you can simply lay your phone on top of the charger. The wireless charger should take about 120 minutes to fully charge your phone! With the regular cable, Samsung claims that it will only take 90 minutes to recharge. If this is true, it is not bad at all!

New Accessories

Do you miss the good-old keyboard? Since the touchscreen has been introduced and perfected, keyboards have pretty much been eliminated. Well, for those who loves keyboards, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and the Note 5 has the option of a keyboard cover for you to type away! BUT, there are a few things that we are so disappointed about the Samsung QWERTY keyboard.

Firstly, it is not stylish at all. I mean just look at it. It looks like a keyboard from a phone that came out almost 10 years ago. And considering the kinds of design that Samsung have come up with over the years, this is a big step back. The material is completely plastic. Another disappointing thing about the keyboard is that it is basically just a “physical” version of what’s actually on screen. They did not take ergonomics or other factors involved. It is as if they copied and paste the onscreen keyboard layout and made a physical version. Lastly, the keyboard price. It was announced that it would cost around $80 in the U.S! That is a little overboard, considering how poorly designed it is. But then again, it is still a good accessory, if you really need a keyboard.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ Singapore Release Date and S6 Edge+ Price

As for now, the official availability for the S6 Edge + in Singapore is still unsure. It is likely that it will be available next month. In the U.S, it is currently open for pre-order. It will likely to hit the stores on August 21st. For no-contract Galaxy S6 Edge Plus price, it is $768 and $864, depending on the storage option in the U.S. As expected, and seen from the past with the S6 Edge, it is very pricey. Because of its high price, we don’t believe that it will be a great hit like the release of the Galaxy S6. Let’s hope that Samsung Singapore can come out with a better pricing.

Overall Verdict

We do see a few changes from the Edge to the Edge+. However, we are not entirely convinced that you should invest in the Edge Plus. It is essentially a bigger version of a S6 Edge. We don’t believe it is enough to really make it a must-buy phone. It does not mean that it is a bad phone at all. We do feel that the S6 Edge is already a great device with most features that are available in the Edge+. With the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus coming out next month, we suggest you wait for the official announcement to decide on the phone you actually want to upgrade!
