Laptop Buying Guide

When it is your first time to buy a laptop or considering an upgrade, the difficulty comes when choosing the right laptop for you. Desktops upgrades are frequent when it comes to the specifications, unlike laptops that do not often get upgrades.

There are several laptop types from ultra-portable laptops, gaming laptops or multimedia laptops and buying one, means that it needs to be suitable for your budget and your needs. The below guide helps:

Size

The different sizes of laptops manufactured are to suit different users; from notebooks to ultra books, the size reflects the weight proportionately. If you are constantly on the move, ultra books are advisable to use because they have screen sizes ranging between 12 to 13 inches and weighs between 1 to 1.5 kg.

Processor

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brain of the laptop, and has a use in processing the user’s files and activity. Different processors are from different manufacturers, for example Intel, AMD and mobile chip. The processors increase the ability of the laptop to conduct the processes.

Intel powered laptops have different generations of processors from i7, i5 and i3. The i7 being the more powerful processor from Intel.

RAM

RAM of the laptop ensures the processors and the Operating system works hand in hand. Memory Chips bridge the processor from the hardware and software of the laptop. RAM stores processor files temporarily before displaying the result.

RAM is between 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB, depending on your processes, you can select the more suitable to avoid your computer from having crashes.

Hard disk

A laptop hard disk provides space to store files and documents, depending on the number of files you have, you can choose either a 500GB or a 750GB hard disk. The larger the hard disk, the more files you will be able to store in your laptop.

The laptop can be a HDD only or both SSD and HDD. SDD allows the laptop to load programs at a fast rate thus is better to have.

Battery life

Screen brightness and processes in the laptop determine the life of the battery when not running on a power source. The Lithium ion battery in laptops works when the laptop is not in connection with a power source, working for about 6 and 9 hours. The batteries have different power storage, and this causes the variation in the stand by time.

Wireless Capability

There are wireless enabled laptops that have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth properties. Bluetooth is for file transfer between two computers, and Wi-Fi is to send files and connect you to the internet from your work place, restaurants or cafes.

Screen Quality and Screen Resolution

There are two types of laptop screens namely backlit screen and glossy type. Glossy types of screen reflect natural and artificial light hence can be more distracting. Backlit types of screens are perfect even when in use for a long period.

Screen resolution defines the clarity of images displayed on the screen, and laptops with 1280 by 800 pixels and above is suitable for image display.

Keyboard and touchpad

Comfort in typing is considerable when looking for the right keyboard for you; some keys are plastic and others rubber. Rubber keys on the keyboard are more comfortable to use and clean.

The touchpad of the laptop allows you to navigate the pointer that displays in the screen and select items. The touchpad should be effectively sensitive and responsive to touch to allow you in making selections easily.

Operating System

This is the main software that bridges the user of the laptop with the hardware of the laptop. Operating systems are a variety these days; examples are Windows from Microsoft, Mac OS X from Apple, Android from Google and Linux distributions software that are free.

Proprietary software such as Windows from Microsoft and Mac OS X from Apple require you to purchase the license to be able to install. Android from Google is a Smart phone and Tablet Operating System, but recently many people are installing Android Operating system on laptops.

Linux distributions have become many recently and are tricky for beginner users to try out though with training and getting used to it, you can effectively use a computer running on Linux software.
