Estee Lauder is truly representative of the American dream. This is a makeup company that truly represented the heart of America’s best attributes. This company was founded on the principle that every women should feel beautiful in their own skin.
Born Josephine Esther Mentzer, the young entrepreneur got her start by selling creams that were created by her chemist uncle. She sold her cosmetics to different establishments including everything from beauty shops to beach resorts.
She changed her surname is Lauder in her early 20s, after meeting her husband. The company name itself was the combination of her two names. Estee was her nickname growing up, her husband’s name was actually Lauter, which eventually became Lauder. The company was established in 1935 after an owner of a beauty salon asked her about her perfect skin. That eventually led to a partnership which Lauder sold products out of the beauty salon.
She continued to move her products into bigger marketplaces and in 1948 was finally able to convince the owners of Saks Fifth Avenue to place her products in their store. Being an outstanding entrepreneur, Lauder utilized a personal approach to selling her products. This meant interacting with customers and getting to know exactly what they wanted. Lauder kept her passion for improving her products and was later known to attend new makeup launches, even after 40 years in the business.
Another effective method of marketing was sending small samples of her product to the trendsetters of her time. She wanted to make sure that everyone who represented the best was using her product.
One of her biggest product launches was a fragrance called Youth Dew, a product that doubled as a perfume and bath oil. This was much different than the other fragrance products on the market, and it was a huge hit with consumers.
In its debut year, 1953, the product sold approximately 50,000 units. That figure increased dramatically over the years and by 1984 Youth Dew was moving around 150 million units a year. There was a documentary released on her life at this time where she indicated she had never gone a day in her life without selling cosmetics.
